Soundtrack

The soundtrack

When making a film,I have learnt that every detail is detrimental  to the outcome. However, one of the most important elements to the film is its soundtrack. It often insinuates to the audience the films mood and creates atmosphere. This is why we had to take our time when deciding on the music. There was many routes we could of gone down;A classic horror soundtrack, that has eerie music but is not blatantly scary, a rocky soundtrack that reflects the violent nature and fast pace of the film,or we could work with the idea of contrapuntal sound.Based on these thoughts we decided the eerie sound track would be most appropriate as the idea of contrapuntal sound is used in more paranormal based horrors.Once we were decided on this,it became apparent there was a range of choices within this genre. We listened to multiple tracks, trying to decide if it fitted the pace of the film and reflected the feeling and plot.Considering these factors we decided on the track heard in the clip below.

Research into similar title sequences
I have already researched into the first couple of minutes and overall similarities in different films but I haven't yet looked into similar title sequences, from what I understand there are a few key area to analyse when going through a title sequence:
Genre conventions:
things that are associated with the genre of the film and help an audience to identify it from a different sub genre E.G. you can tell a paranormal horror from a generic slasher because a paranormal slasher would usually be about a ghost or demon whereas a generic slasher is about a murderer such as Freddy Kruger or Jason voorhees.
Iconography:
Things that are usually associated with the film in a visual way E.G. the hokey mask and machete being used by Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th and the kitchen knife used by Michael Myers in Halloween.
Similarities:

Research into similar films

There are many films that show numerous similarities to the type of film we want to create. The one I have chose to investigate is the ' the book of zombie'(released in 2010).

The film starts with a couple having an evening in on a cold evening in Utah. This night is an attempt in trying to rekindle there love as there relationship has gone cold. There daughter(Charlotte) is sleeping out at a friends/relatives.There night is interrupted by two Mormons calling at the door asking for a minute of there time. The man who opened the door shrugs off the encounter with a few jokes, thought nothing of it and resumes his evening. However the doorbell rings again, this time as blood thirsty Mormons, along with some recruited zombies who are overrunning the neighbour hood. They escape. The male protagonist (David) seeks out a weapon doubled barrelled shotgun) from acquaintance, Harry Linderman; bar and shop owner. The couple (David and Jenny) go to harry's shop, meeting two new characters in the process - Darwin and Charlie. The gun is not at the shop.Feeling fearful of what could happen if they were to go get Charlotte without a weapon, they stay in the shop. Boothe Gardener,a new character, makes a dramatic entrance to the shop and also stays the night.Despite the safety of the shop friend Charlie is killed. The group soon find that the Zombies weakness is Caffine and they can be killed using this.To reinforce this theory when a zombie invades the shop Darwin kills the zombie with Caffinated soda. The group are forced to evacuate the store and head to Lindermans bar. However there journey attracts zombies. They are saved at the last moment by Piper Mckenzie who leads them inside. She tells the group that Linderman has been Zombifies, but she couldnt bring herself to kill him,so he is locked in a room in the bar.David still fixated on saving his daughter, devises a plan;to reach Pipers car  by letting Linderman out. However, once free,Linderman bites Darwin.Having no choice Darwin shoots Linderman.Knowing his fate once bitten, darwin takes the role of suicide bomber,to kill the zombies approaching the bar.Although all does not go to plan as Darwin turns into a zombie before the new plan was able to be acheived.Despite this there was attempts to still light the bombs fuse, but the explosion proved to be too weak.Beefore the door can be re-barricaded,zombies enter the bar and devour piper alive.David and Jenny retreat, but jenny is still bitten by the zombies, leaving her mortally wounded.David promises his dying wife he will find his daughter, then holds her utnil she dies.To prevent her turning into a zombie,David decapitates her.As morning dawns,David staggers off, filled with revenge.

Film certificate

Film Certificate
there are quite a few different certificates that mean quite a few different things, they are all classified by the BBFC (British Board Of Film Classification) and they represent the age a person has to be to view a film. Usually films are given a rating so that kids can't go and watch a graphics and gory movie, this is good for cinema companies because it means that people can't sue the cinema if they are traumatised by the film, they also serve as a universal standard for the watching of films as many companies have similar rules in place to prevent such things from happening.

U:
the U symbol stands for universal, which means that the film that has this certificate must be suitable for children of 4 years and above. However, it is very hard to ono what will upset a particular child so sometimes these certificates can't protect everyone.

PG:
the PG certificate means that parental guidance is required to watch the film, a PG film would ideally be aimed at a child of 8 or over because its guaranteed not to unsettle them. Although parents should consider if the content would be upsetting for a child of a younger age.

12 and 12A:
The films with these certificates are usually aimed at people 12 or under, meaning the content is usually not that mature but might contain some subjects or topics that a parent might not be comfortable with their child viewing

15:
The films that have these certificates on them are aimed at people 15 and over, meaning the content can be largely more for the more mature viewer. They usually contain strong language, scenes of violence and scenes of a sexual nature, these are usually shown in cinemas and on DVD. The large majority of films that populate this certificate are often comedies, action movies and horrors.

18:
The films with these certificates are often aimed at adults or very mature people as the content they contain is often violent or has very sexually suggestive scenes in them. They are usually shown in most cinemas unless they are of a seriously violent nature in which case they fall under the category of "R18", the films that populate this category are more often than not horrors or very controversial comedies sor documentaries like the ones that show actual war footage with real people being killed.

Target Audience
if we are going to make a film and have it distributed, it would be a good idea to have a look into the audience we are aiming the film at an who is most likely to watch it E.g. A disney animation is aimed primarily at kids because children are more likely to want to watch a family friendly cartoon. The genre of our film is a horror so are target audience is more than likely above 18, our target audience therefore is anyone over the age of 18 which gives us quite a wide audience to work with. Our film is specifically a zombie thriller and the people that usually watch these films are teenagers because its become a good genre to do with films like "ZombieLand" and "Shaun Of The Dead" making a big impact and raking in quite a bit of money.

Our target audience also means that we have to think about how we as a company have our film distributed, its more than likely that we would captivate a wider audience if we advertised a zombie film on social media than if we used paper based advertising to rake in the crowds, but we can't just put all our eggs in one basket and focus on social media we also have to distribute it to cinemas. we could get a large teenage audience because if we get a good amount of releases at the right time, say in the summer holiday or another time period where they aren't at work or university, then we could get a lot of people to watch our film.

Treatment for 'Z-Ebola'

Title : Z-Ebola

Duration : 2 minutes

Audience:This film could interest a range of individuals, both young and old.The younger audience could be teens(mainly boys) with an established interest in the zombie-horror genre. The older audience could be inquisitive film enthusiasts willing to watch any type of film,or zombie genre fans.

Distributor:Hammer film productions

Summary of story:
Melissa Jane (17) had come home from a hard day at college feeling uneasy and scared about the rumored outbreak of 'Z-ebola'.To confirm Melissa's fears a news report interrupts her normal TV viewing, speaking about outbreak and urging people to stay inside.Melissa becomes increasingly  nervous as her attention turns to her boyfriend and him still being at work.At this moment Danny(Melissa's boyfriend) returns home.Overjoyed and relieved with his return, she begins to ask where he has been and warns him about the virus.Annoyed and exhausted from his day at work he has very little patience with his 'paranoid' girlfriend and goes outside to have a cigarette. It is at this point that Danny is attacked by a blood thirsty zombie.

Suggested elements:
Due to a short period of time to film in,we decided to incorporate a photo montage in to the film,as seen in 'Shaun of the dead',a film that is also from the 'zombie horror genre but with a comic spin. This will allow us to convey a lot of the story and let the film progress at a more interesting pace in a both time efficient and effective way.
